Peter Zumthor, Real and Imagined Buildings
Peter Zumthor, internationally acclaimed Swiss architect, gives an interview in which he reveals his thoughts on imagined buildings, dreams and architectural time. Including footage of his Thermal Baths, Vals and Saint Benedict's Chapel, Sumtvitg, Zumthor responds to the depiction of the stable in Ercole de' Roberti's 'Nativity', about 1490, by declaring "a good building should have a soul." This film is one of five giving contemporary perspectives on the National Gallery exhibition 'Building the Picture: Architecture in Italian Renaissance Painting' (30 April - 21 September 2014).

……………………La gigantesca y trascendente obra de Le Corbusier se desarrolló a través de una gran cantidad de métodos y sistemas de proyectar, alguno de los cuales inventó él mismo. Pero no fue ajeno a la tradición clásica y antigua, como es bien conocido, por lo que llegó a utilizar incluso el sistema claustral o en torno a patios, aunque de manera propia y singular. También utilizó la composición por partes o elementos, que heredó de la academia, dándole una versión modernizada, como algunos otros arquitectos también harían, sustituyendo el lenguaje clásico, o los eclécticos e historicistas, por el vocabulario racionalista que en buena medida se debe a él………..
……….Con motivo de la Exposición Internacional de Barcelona de 1929, Mies van der Rohe construyó el Pabellón alemán –de vida efímera, desmontado meses después y reconstruido en 1986–, considerado por muchos la obra arquitectónica más importante del siglo XX. Mediante el uso combinado y geométrico del vidrio, el acero cromado y los diferentes tipos de piedra (muros de mármoles verdes y de ónice dorado, muros y suelos de travertino), el edificio propone una nueva concepción racional del espacio arquitectónico.
